What Metal Braces Feel Like the First Few Days

What Metal Braces Feel Like the First Few Days from Michael Emanuel DDS PLLC in Brooklyn, NYAnyone who has ever had braces before can understand how weird everything feels the first few days after getting them. There is a sense of excitement knowing you are on your way to a brand new, better, looking smile, but at the same time, you may have some anxiety over what the future will hold.

You feel and look different, but it will all make sense once the entire process is completed. This time will prove to be eventful, life-changing, and surprising for sure. During the first week or more, you will notice some differences in how you feel things inside your mouth.

Sensitivity and mild aching

It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity after getting this new metal put in your mouth. Your mouth is put through a lot of pressure, sounds, feelings, and it takes time to readjust. The sensitivity is minor and will go away; you must give your mouth time to feel like itself again.

You will also have some mild aching at the gum line and around your teeth, and in your jaws. The process takes a while, and you will be sitting in the dental chair for an extended period and holding your mouth open for a long time.

Both symptoms will fade away eventually, so don’t get too worried. Remember to always to ask your orthodontist any questions or concerns you have.

Mouth sores

It is very common for a person to get mouth sores after getting metal placed inside your mouth. They tend to rub on your gums, and the metal may cause discomfort when being so close to your cheeks. If the mouth sores cause you trouble, you can rinse your mouth out with a warm saltwater rinse.

You can also use the dental wax provided to you. If you take the wax, rub it into a ball, and put it on the tooth, rubbing your cheeks, the irritation will lessen. These mouth sores will stop coming up once your mouth adjusts to this new foreign object.

Talking and eating

You will notice yourself talking differently during the first few days. Your mouth will try to compensate for the metal around the teeth, causing your lips and tongue to react differently. This is very normal and should not cause you any concern.

Everything you put in your mouth is going to feel different. The foods you used to love may not be your favorites anymore, and one thing to keep in mind is that your braces are food magnets. Everything will want to get tangled in the metal, so you want to be sure you are keeping up on your oral health routine. Be sure to brush, floss, and use all your dentist’s advice when taking care of your mouth.
