The day you get your braces removed is a great day. This is the day you can finally show off your perfectly aligned smile. Unfortunately, sometimes white spots can appear on the teeth when the braces are taken off, which can result in a smile you’re not so happy about. The good news is that you can prevent having these white spots.

The white spots occur when plaque clings to the teeth and removes the minerals from the tooth enamel. To help you prevent this from happening, our orthodontist, Dr. Michael Emanuel, has some tips for you.

First, remove the plaque as much as you can regularly. You can do so by brushing and flossing every morning, every night, and after each meal and snack. This might seem a bit obsessive, but brushing and flossing this frequently is the best way to take care of your teeth and braces anyway. You also need to visit your dentist every six months for a professional dental cleaning.

Second, use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help keep plaque from harming the tooth enamel. In fact, the fluoride strengthens and nourishes the enamel, keeping dental issues at bay. So, make sure you brush with fluoride toothpaste each time you clean your smile.
