Proper Oral Hygiene in Braces Matters to the Health of Your Smile

Posted .

Taking care of your smile is essential for those teeth you want to keep. This is even more so when you are investing time and money to straighten your smile with orthodontia. The basic essentials of brushing and flossing while wearing braces need to be continued while exercising caution to avoid accidentally harming the brackets and wires.

Because flossing can be difficult with braces, it may be a good idea to add an additional level of treatment such as mouthwash. In addition, follow these important tips to keep your braces clean and durable:

Let’s take a quick look at some tips to help you keep your smile in braces in the best possible condition:

— While wearing braces, you will still want to brush your teeth twice each day and floss at least once daily.

— Be sure to keep all scheduled orthodontic visits scheduled with your orthodontist.

— Make sure to thoroughly clean your retainer to prevent bacterial buildup or contamination.

— If you participate in sports, you will want to wear safety gear when playing contact sports or doing high-risk activities. This might include mouth guards, face masks, helmets, and any other safety gear necessary to protect your mouth.

— Try to avoid foods and snacks that might get stuck in between your braces and teeth. Examples include chewy candies, hard or tough foods and snacks, and ice.

— If for any reason a wire breaks or snaps off of your braces, protect the broken end with a piece of wax and call our orthodontist immediately.
