Depending on your personal needs, you may need a retainer to complete your orthodontic treatment or act as an alternative to braces. Our orthodontist and team offer a variety of retainers, including the Essix retainer, which is made of removable transparent plastic. Dr. Michael Emanuel will help you choose the perfect retainer in Brooklyn, New York, when you come to our office for treatment. When it comes time to wear a retainer, we invite you to schedule an appointment with our office.
To maintain the alignment of your teeth after you complete an orthodontic treatment, our orthodontist may give you a custom-made appliance called a retainer. A retainer will help keep your smile properly aligned because as you age, your teeth tend to shift out of place. Retainers will prevent shifting and also help you maintain optimal oral health, functionality and appearance. There are three main types of retainers:
- Hawley retainers include wires and clasps embedded in a plastic body. They will cover the roof of the mouth (for the upper arch) or lie under your tongue (for the lower arch). To keep the retainer anchored in place, the clasps are fitted around certain teeth, and to maintain alignment, the wires will arch across the front of the teeth.
- Clear retainers are made of clear plastic and fit close against the teeth. A clear retainer is not always more durable than a Hawley retainer but is usually more discreet.
- Fixed retainers, also referred to as bonded or permanent retainers, are permanently attached to the back of your front teeth. They prevent teeth from moving out of alignment and can only be removed by a dental professional.
After your orthodontic treatment is complete, our orthodontist will determine whether you need a retainer to keep your new smile straight. To schedule an appointment or learn more, we invite you to call our office!
