What Should I Do If I Broke My Braces Away From Home?

Posted .

Unfortunately, orthodontic emergencies and mishaps happen, even when you’re away from home. This is quite inconvenient, troublesome, and even stressful. Fortunately, there are things you can do to treat the problem and improve the situation so you don’t need to worry about your braces on your trip. Our orthodontist, Dr. Michael Emanuel, is happy to give you those steps.

Step No. 1: Adjust the hardware. With a broken bracket, slide the piece back over the necessary tooth. You can do this with your fingers or with tweezers if necessary. With a broken wire, put the wire back in place with a pencil eraser. If this is a tough job, just put the wire in a place that doesn’t bother or irritate you.

Step No. 2: Get your orthodontic wax. When everything is in the proper position, put the orthodontic wax over it. This will keep the broken hardware from bugging or even cutting your gums and oral tissues. It will also keep the bracket from sliding around in your mouth.

Step No. 3: Schedule an appointment. You don’t necessarily have to visit our office today, but it’s recommended to come in for an appointment as soon as you can. So, when you call our office, explain the situation and schedule an appointment for a time when you’re back in town.
